  Taxco History

A colonial town situated in the mountainous region of western Mexico in the state of Guerrero, Taxco is known as the "City of Silver". This is because of its silver mines and local artisans that hand-craft unique, high quality silver products.

In the 16th century silver mines were discovered in Taxco. The discovery of rich mineral deposits attracted the interest of the Spaniards. In 1522, the conquistador Cortez learned that the Tlahuicas paid tribute to the Aztecs in silver and other precious metals. The Spaniards conquered the region and three centuries later Mexico became independent. Today Taxco is Mexico's main center for the silver trade.
